Whippoorwill Retreat House

Trenton, Georgia, United States

Overview

If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful getaway, this place cannot be beaten. The Treehouse is so unique in itself, plus all the extra special touches inside. Whippoorwill Retreat is nestled in the treetops on Sand Mountain’s side, located only twenty minutes from downtown Chattanooga, Tn.

This private, romantic two-story getaway by Billy and Susan was built to bring the outdoors in with floor to ceiling views, wrap-around porch, sun/moon rise perch, & fire pit for lazy long nights.

Bedroom

Stairs lead up to the Canopy Suit bedroom, which houses a queen size bed with a handcrafted cedar headboard and is fitted with a luxury memory foam mattress topped with an electric mattress pad heater and hotel-quality sheets. A space heater is also provided to assist the heat pump for those extra chillier days.

The suite provides a step-out porch with a clear roof. The bedroom’s main feature is the four-foot by the six-foot overhead view of the sky right over the bed—no need for candlelight when you’ve got the stars and moon to provide the romance.

You will find a suspended full-size bed in another bedroom featuring a headboard that was up-cycled from an antique babies’ bed. The bed is finished with a luxury memory foam mattress and topped with an electric mattress pad heater and hotel-quality sheets. At the end of the suspended bed behind the barn door, you’ll see “Donald the Butler” fully loaded and ready for use.

Bathroom

This space provides a full bath featuring an overhead rain shower. This area is surrounded by shoulder height windows creating a relaxing outdoor feel in the forest canopy.

Livingspace

In the foyer, you will see two trees that extend through both floors of the treehouse. Upon passing through the trees, you are greeted with a spectacular view through floor to ceiling glass, supported with live edge beams from a 150-year-old Eastern Red Cedar tree.

The tree was originally from the nearby Chickamauga National Battlefield area. After being cut down by the power company, the owners obtained the tree and wanted to preserve the tree’s history using it as several main features in the treehouse. In addition to the supports, you will see this tree utilized as countertops, shelves, stair treads, and frames.

There is a fully stocked coffee bar that includes creamer and sugar. Just around the corner is the kitchen featuring an antique icebox used for cabinets and houses a small ice maker. Also, in the kitchen, you will find a microwave oven, an under-counter refrigerator/freezer, a toaster, and a small dishwasher.

On the top shelf of Donald, you will find an electric griddle to help you with that morning pancakes and bacon breakfast. A full array of spices is provided. Whippoorwill Retreat offers “dining with a view” at a unique antique enamel, expandable table next to the floor to ceiling glass front.

The living area features a leather recliner loveseat and antique chair from The Read House Historic Inn located in downtown Chattanooga. The chair maintains its original fabric and finish. A space heater is also provided to assist the heat pump for those extra cold days. This area is perfect for you to enjoy the view while relaxing with a book, watching TV, surfing the web, or taking a long nap.

Exterior

Upon arrival, you are provided a golf cart that will take you along a beautiful, scenic path to Whippoorwill Retreat treehouse. It is nestled in the center of nine acres of a pristine Whippoorwill habitat. This is a “true” treehouse as you will find it supported by trees that extend all the way through both floors.

This treehouse is laced with history and unique charm, which is incorporated into numerous features throughout. The main support beam and all of the beautiful board and batten siding came from 50+-year-old Southern Yellow Pine trees from the owner’s property. Additionally, the owners have incorporated numerous amenities that will help you to relax during your stay fully.

No need to worry about how you will get your belongings up in the treehouse. Just pull the golf cart next to “Donald the Butler” (dumb waiter/luggage lift/closet) to unload your luggage/groceries, go inside, press a button, and up it comes loaded with everything in place ready for your stay. Upon departure, please press the button, and down it goes ready for your trip home.

As you park the golf cart, you will see the entry courtyard, where you will find a cozy fire pit with seating. You bring the stories and music; we provide the s’mores! Next, you will walk up an easy handicap accessible ramp to the foyer, where you are greeted with a basket full of welcome goodies from the local area.

Whippoorwill Retreat is run on solar power, incorporates green products and practices, and offers professional chef services. You can order a gourmet picnic basket or have an in-house meal prepared just for you by Chef Eric Callahan. Sign up available after reservations are made, and you fill out the online Whippoorwill Retreat Agreement form. This place is also handicapped accessible as there are no steps or stairs in the entrance.
